Colorado Resiliency & Recovery Office

Challenge

Governor Hickenlooper asked the Colorado Resilience office to create a framework for Colorado communities to thrive amidst natural disasters caused by climate change such as floods and fires. We were hired as part of the Atomic20 team to lead a statewide co-creation project, involving citizens and special interest groups with a variety of engagement tools.

Approach

We used the following tools:

• Online surveys among general public & government employees
• Focus groups and individual interviews with affected communities across Colorado
• Expert interviews
• #COresilient social media campaign

Outcome

The insights deck and brochure we created formed the foundation for the Colorado resiliency framework, which received the Gold 2017 National Planning Achievement Award for Environmental Planning from the American Planning Association (APA). APA honors environmental planning efforts that "create more sustainable and greener communities that reduce the impact of development on the natural environment and improve environmental quality."
